The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international, independent organization that provides the GRI standards on sustainability reporting.

The GRI was established in 1997 in Boston and launched the first set of reporting guidelines (G1) in 2000. In 2002 it was relocated to Amsterdam, where its headquarters are until today. In 2016 there was a transition from providing guidelines for reporting to providing reporting standards.

The last revision of its standards was in 2021 and can be downloaded translated in many languages. Besides the general standards applicable to all kinds of organizations, a number of sector specific standards are also available.

The English Version of the standards (that include all the available updates) are comprised of 43 standards that include a glossary and a consolidated set of standards that are constantly updated.

The Global Reporting Initiative provides online training through The GRI Academy on impact reporting. The flagship program of the GRI Professional Certification Program comprises of four courses and an exam.
